The StudyOke! Manifesto

We birthed StudyOke! in one thousand nights of whiskey-fueled karaoke sessions across Japan.

We’ve sung karaoke in every conceivable situation and every conceivable place. We’ve used to karaoke to impress our co-workers, land business deals, fall in love, and build friendships to last a lifetime.

Whether we’re performing in front of a crowd in Osaka or crashing strangers’ private boxes in Tokyo, the StudyOke! crew is committed to mastering the art of the song.

But karaoke isn’t just a ridiculously fun life skill for careers and friendships, it’s a gateway to experiencing the magnificent place we call Japan. Karaoke may not be the Heart of Japan™, but it is where the Heart of Japan™ goes to party.

It’s also the perfect way to study the Japanese language. No matter how many hours you spend flipping flashcards and writing out kanji, it’s not going to stick until your brain knows it’s important.

Your brain is great at forgetting things! Your keys, your wallet, that important scrap of paper you can’t find. Above all, your brain is good at forgetting vocabulary and grammar you don’t use on an every-day basis.

But there is a way around this – music. Learning one 3-minute J-Pop song will do more to solidify Japanese vocabulary and grammar in your head than 12 hours of flash cards. Putting words to music lights up that part of your brain that says “Hey! This is important!”

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to learn Japanese in order to use Japanese. Start using Japanese to sing and we guarantee you will start truly learning Japanese.

We spent hours and hours in Japanese classes, but it didn’t click until we were holding a microphone in one hand and a double whiskey in the other. Those are the moments when the language comes alive.

Your Japanese textbooks are good for many things, but being ridiculously fun is not one of them. So when you’re ready to use Japanese instead of just learning it, come by StudyOke! We guarantee the worst thing that can happen is you’ll have a ridiculous amount of fun while using Japanese.

The StudyOke! Guarantee: Learning One 3-Minute Song is More Fun, Useful, and Effective than 12 Hours of Flash Cards
